What new laws are being thought up now?!
Did you know there’s a law that designates that the ribeye is the official state steak of Oklahoma? I remember in 2019 when that was discussed on the House floor and thinking that this can’t possibly be worth our time and resources. Maybe it is. Meat isn’t really my area of law. Want another interesting law? We have a state law that makes it illegal for a tattoo artist to tattoo your eyeballs. And, another state law grants tax dollars in the form of vouchers to (some) private school parents.
Yes, I just compared tattooing your eyeballs to private school vouchers. They are both pretty damn scary to me! Elements of reckless responsibility, decision-making, and consequences. I’ll stop there. But given the test of time, I know which I expect to be most detrimental in the end.
The idea for this blog came from a desire to share what I see and hear about proposed new school laws. So I plan to tell you about those but also expect to make some fun side quests of other non-school-related laws too.
Bill filing starts soon!
Thousands of new proposed bills will be submitted over the next several days in Oklahoma! Each year, there are hundreds just related to schools. And I am really looking forward to reading those! I will let you in on what’s being proposed, discussed, voted upon, and also what’s being completely reworked and changed into something very different than how it originated.
What’s expected to be proposed in this upcoming 2025 legislative session?
- Students’ cell phone use and possession
- Student mental health concerns and social media
- Safety and security of schools
- Artificial intelligence
- Workforce development
While school law is my main focus, I still like to peek into discussions and considerations of other proposed bills. It is common for other areas of law to impact kids and schools. Simply put, it’s entertaining! And I want to share that entertainment with you! I just don’t want to keep it to myself anymore. And I can save you time on knowing what is going on with these new bill proposals coming our way.
I want to encourage you, my friends, to pay attention and hope you will advocate for your own interests, family, community, local resources, etc. Voting is important but your involvement doesn’t have to stop there. Call your local legislator. Heck, make an appointment and go visit the Capitol to see your senator and representative. A handful of contacts from constituents can make a difference.
As we get closer to the legislative session, I’ll bring you tidbits and insights so you can be in the know as it relates to education. It’s going to be fun!! See you back here soon…
